The 123rd is absolutely packed with important and informative events. The pace of the four-day confab is relentless, which is exactly what audio professionals want: a full and focused schedule that mixes critically important panels and workshops with equally insightful discussions and book offerings.
On Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Dr. Barry Blesser will deliver the lunchtime keynote, “The Art of Space: Audio Engineers as Aural Architects.” Dr. Blesser has been an active contributor to the AES for more than 40 years. He has served as president, organized the first digital audio conference, and received the Silver, Bronze, Board of Governors and publication awards. Last year, MIT Press published his book.
Day 3 (Sunday) also features two panel discussions sure to attract an overflow crowd. From 1-2:30 p.m. in Room 1E12/13, Gateway Mastering’s Bob Ludwig will moderate “Platinum Mastering,” which will include a discussion of today’s “loudness wars” and other issues currently important to mastering.
In the same room from 3-4:30 p.m., pro audio journalist Paul Verna will lead Platinum Engineers, featuring veteran and up-and-coming professionals in a discussion of their recording and mixing techniques as well as the challenges and opportunities of today’s recording industry. Confirmed panelists include Steve Rosenthal, Bob Clearmountain, Young Guru, Tony Maserati, Ralph Sutton, Kevin Killen, John Horesco and Nick Sansano.
At 5 p.m. on Sunday, two-time Grammy winner Allen Sides of Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood will discuss a recent history-making recording session with Mary J. Blige and a full orchestra at Ocean Way (Room 1E04). In the session, Sides recorded 48 tracks simultaneously at 24-bit/192kHz using one Intel-based PC running Cakewalk’s Sonar. The session will include a Q&A.
